Paradoxes of Anthropocene

  • Speaker: prof. dr hab. Ewa Bińczyk
  • Abstract: The concept of the Anthropocene was introduced into the public discussion around the year 2000 by natural scientists, Paul Crutzen and Eugene Stoermer. The experts wanted to emphasize that in the second half of the 20th century, homo sapiens, understood as a species, became a driving force of planetary significance, which resembled geological forces. The debate concerning the Anthropocene is assessed as a unique, unprecedented debate in the history of science, very important politically, methodologically, and full of incredible emotions. In my speech I want to focus on five structures of contradiction concerning the concept of the Anthropocene. These paradoxical topics plaguing the debate concern: 1) the very category of the Anthropo-cene, 2) the condition of the environmentalism in the post-natural world, 3) the shocking contrast between hyperagency of the few some and the helplessness of the many, 4) the massive scale of radical political challenges in the epoch of urgency and 5) the necessity of meaningful social mobilization in the context of the paralyzis and denialism.
