The Nicolaus Copernicus University was celebrating its University Day on 19 February 2017 – the 554. birth anniversary of its patron, Nicolaus Copernicus (born 19 February 1473). As each year, a special ceremony was held as a tribute to the man who “stopped the Sun and moved the Earth”.
The Nicolaus Copernicus University was celebrating its University Day on 19 February 2017 – the 554. birth anniversary of its patron, Nicolaus Copernicus (born 19 February 1473). As each year, a special ceremony was held as a tribute to the man who “stopped the Sun and moved the Earth”.
The ceremony was preceded by a University Concert of the Toruń Symphony Orchestra, the Military Orchestra and the NCU Academic Choir, accompanied by notable soloists and conductors, held on 18 February. On 19 February, the celebrations traditionally began with laying flowers at the monument of Nicolaus Copernicus in Toruń. The main official event was held in the NCU Main Hall in Toruń.

During the University Day celebrations, 111 newly-graduated doctors and 59 habilitated doctors received their diplomas. New Honorary Professors and Ambassadors of the Nicolaus Copernicus University were also nominated.

Medals were awarded to long-serving University employees, including seven from NCU Collegium Medicum:
- dr Małgorzata Tyloch, Faculty of Medicine – Gold Medal for Long Service;
- Małgorzata Warda, Faculty of Health Sciences – Gold Medal for Long Service;
- dr Agnieszka Mikucka, Faculty of Pharmacy – Silver Medal for Long Service;
- dr Danuta Ponczek, Faculty of Health Sciences – Silver Medal for Long Service;
- Agnieszka Walińska, Faculty of Health Sciences – Silver Medal for Long Service;
- mgr Katarzyna Dąbrowska, University Administration – Bronze Medal for Long Service;
- dr Marzena Humańska, Faculty of Health Sciences – Bronze Medal for Long Service.
Medals of the Commission of National Education were awarded by the Minister of Science and Higher Education to sixteen distinguished teachers, including six from NCU Collegium Medicum:
- dr Wanda Drewniak, Faculty of Pharmacy;
- dr hab. Marek Foksiński, Faculty of Pharmacy;
- dr Krystyna Kurowska, Faculty of Health Sciences;
- dr hab. Dorota Olszewska-Słonina, Faculty of Pharmacy;
- prof. dr hab. Władysław Sinkiewicz, Faculty of Health Sciences;
- prof. dr hab. Wojciech Zegarski, Faculty of Health Sciences.
