A team of specialists from the Department of Oncological Surgery at the Faculty of Health Sciences of NCU Collegium Medicum was the first in Poland and in Central Europe to perform a novel chemotherapy procedure – Pressurized Intraperitoneal Aerosol Chemotherapy (PIPAC).
A team of specialists from the Department of Oncological Surgery at the Faculty of Health Sciences of NCU Collegium Medicum was the first in Poland and in Central Europe to perform a novel chemotherapy procedure – Pressurized Intraperitoneal Aerosol Chemotherapy (PIPAC). The team included prof. dr hab. Wojciech Zegarski and dr Maciej Nowacki, assisted by dr Marek Przybył. The procedure was carried out on 10 May 2017 in the F. Łukaszczyk Oncology Centre in Bydgoszcz.
Pressurized Intraperitoneal Aerosol Chemotherapy is an innovative combination of laparoscopy and a novel drug delivery system used in the treatment of patients with metastatic cancer of the stomach, ovaries, colorectum, or of other aetiology.
The PIPAC procedure is currently performed in 20 countries, mostly Eastern European, in a total of 100 highly specialised treatment centres offering this new method. Technical supervision of the first two surgeries in Bydgoszcz was provided personally by the creator of the method, Professor Marc Reymond, who performed the first PIPAC surgery in November 2011 after nearly 30 years of clinical and technical preparations, including numerous in vitro and in vivo studies. Professor Reymond represents one of the best and most renowned surgical centres in Germany – the Department of General, Visceral and Transplant Surgery of University of Tübingen (Universitätsklinik für Allgemeine, Viszeral- und Transplantationschirurgie), headed by Professor Alfred Königsrainer.
