On 20 January we bade a final farewell to Professor Józef Kałużny, one of the founders of the Medical University in Bydgoszcz – currently NCU Collegium Medicum – and its Rector in the years 1990-1996.
In tribute to his life and work, particularly his significant contribution to the establishment and functioning of NCU Collegium Medicum, a memorial public exhibition is being presented in Building A (the Rectorate) at 13 Jagiellońska Street in Bydgoszcz.

Józef Kałużny was born on 17 March 1940. In 1964, he completed his studies at the Faculty of Medicine of the Medical Academy in Poznań. Since 1979, he served as the head of the Department of Ophthalmology at the then Medical University in Bydgoszcz. He served as the University’s Rector for two terms, 1990-1993 and 1993-1996, and as the President of the Polish Ophthalmological Society in the years 1998-2000.

Over his more than forty-year long professional career, Prof. Kałużny performed twenty thousand eye surgeries and was professionally involved in all branches of ophthalmology. He was the first surgeon in Poland to perform the implantation of artificial posterior chamber intraocular lenses in the treatment of cataract in 1985. He was also one of the first experts in the world to implement optical coherence computed tomography into ophthalmological diagnostics. His scientific output includes over 180 publications and three monographs. Since 2008, he worked in the OFTALMIKA Ophthalmic Outpatient Clinic in Bydgoszcz, of which he was the founder and medical affairs director. Despite his advanced age, he was professionally active and committed to his patients until his last days.

Prof. Józef Kałużny passed away on 14 January 2018.
