SOLIDARITY WITH UKRAINE
13th Marc 2020
NCU Rector prof. Andrzej Tretyn

To Employees, Students and Doctoral Students of the Nicolaus Copernicus University

Dear All,
The spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus and the growing number of COVID-19 cases in Poland and abroad have put our Community on the alert. Over the past few days, we have made decisions which affect the functioning of the University and the life of the academic community but are crucial for containing the epidemiological situation. Academic classes, arrivals and departures of faculty and students, conferences and symposia, as well as cultural and sports events have all been cancelled. The activity of many units of our University will be limited, and some units, such as the University Library and the University Sports Centre have been closed entirely. I wish to thank you for your understanding and for abiding by those decisions, even if they hinder your everyday functioning. I have appointed a monitoring team whose task is to analyse all information pertaining to the epidemiological situation in the country for seven days a week, identify any problems related to the functioning of the University, and consequently recommend further actions to be taken. Please familiarise yourselves with relevant directives and news published through the information channels available at the University. Starting from 11 March 2020, we created a dedicated e-mail address: , which you can use to share any queries, doubts or information concerning the current situation and implemented measures.
The epidemiological situation in Poland is serious and is undoubtedly going to worsen. However, there is no reason to be anxious. We have to go through this difficult time together. I urge everyone to follow the most important rules which will help us contain the situation. Please avoid gatherings, limit your contact with others, and maintain scrupulous personal hygiene. Consider staying at home, unless going out is absolutely necessary for performing your work-related duties, maintaining the continuity of research studies, or meeting deadlines for fixing administrative matters. The period when classes are cancelled and the functioning of the University is limited is not a time for resolving overdue matters or improving your social life. Every single person has to be aware of the fact that without the inconvenient but necessary restraints on our everyday activity, containing the spread of the virus will be much more difficult and the number of people infected will continue to rise dramatically. Please mind that – as members of an academic community – we have a particularly significant role to play in society, for our actions are being observed and our example is being followed. Let us demonstrate the right attitude and behaviour, showing everyone how to handle this difficult time. I know our Community very well and I am certain that you will show solidarity with all those for whom the current situation is especially difficult, as well as demonstrate composure, moderation and understanding for the implemented bans and restrictions. As members of the academic community, we have successfully passed many exams. Let us pass this one as well.

Yours faithfully,
Rector of the Nicolaus Copernicus University
