Prof. dr hab. n. med. Wojciech Zegarski, head of the Department of Oncological Surgery at the Faculty of Health Sciences of NCU Collegium Medicum, has been honoured for his outstanding clinical and research activity in the field of surgical oncology with two significant nominations: to the Polish Society of Surgical Oncology and the Polish Club of Coloproctology.

Wojciech Zegarski, head of the Department of Oncological Surgery at the Faculty of Health Sciences of NCU Collegium Medicum, has been honoured for his outstanding clinical and research activity with two nominations to leading Polish societies devoted to the development of recommendations and guidelines in the scope of surgical oncology and coloproctology. Prof. Zegarski has been appointed as Head of the Division of Modern Techniques in Surgical Oncology of the Polish Society of Surgical Oncology, and as member of the Executive Board of the Polish Club of Coloproctology.

Prof. Wojciech Zegarski is a nationally renowned surgeon and an originator of model solutions related to modern methods of treatment, diagnosis and monitoring of patients with colorectal cancer. He is also the founder of the Colorectal Cancer Unit – the leading referral centre in the country with the highest rate of implementation of modern laparoscopic, minimally invasive and electrosurgical techniques. Over the past 15 years, about 5,000 surgical procedures for colorectal cancer have been performed in the centre, 10% of which employed innovative minimally invasive techniques.

Another significant achievement of prof. Zegarski is organising and teaching a series of courses in laparoscopic surgery for colorectal cancer, so far attended by over a hundred surgeons from many academic institutions and hospitals, as well as organising six editions of specialist conferences devoted to rectal cancer and held in Bydgoszcz. Prof. Zegarski was also honoured for performing numerous live-surgery demonstrations transmitted live in several academic centres and for promoting the accomplishments of Polish specialists in surgical oncology worldwide.
