Dr Wojciech Filipiak, assistant professor at the Department of Pharmacodynamics and Molecular Pharmacology at the Faculty of Pharmacy of NCU Collegium Medicum, received a research grant of over PLN 1.7 mln from the National Science Centre. The grant was awarded in the SONATA competition for research projects carried out by researchers beginning their scientific careers.
The theme of the research project carried out by dr Filipiak which won him the said grant is “Breath analysis as an innovative method for diagnosing ventilator-associated pneumonia and monitoring personalised therapy”. Project objectives involve developing a new, completely non-invasive method for the early diagnosis of bacterial pneumonia by means of exhaled breath analysis. Determination of specific volatile biomarkers might be helpful in the pathogenic identification of bacteria, as well as in monitoring the effectiveness of the antibiotic therapy administered.
It is worth mentioning that the amount of financing received by our academic is the highest not only among all grants awarded to NCU researchers but also among all grants awarded in this edition of the national SONATA competition.
