Mechanical thrombectomy is a surgical removal of a thrombus (blood clot) from the cerebral artery. It is performed on patients diagnosed with an occlusion of major cerebral arteries and are thus at risk of severe disability or even death. Sufficiently early thrombectomy restores normal cerebral circulation and allows for a significant reduction of brain damage caused by ischaemia. The procedure is performed by placing a guide catheter with a stent retriever inside into the target artery using transaxillary access. Once at the site of the thrombus, the stent is used to grab the clot and is then removed from the artery along with it. This latest treatment method is currently being implemented in leading stroke management centres worldwide, including only a few clinics in Poland.

The Stroke Care Unit of the University Hospital No. 2 in Bydgoszcz has pioneered thrombolytic treatment consisting in the pharmacological dissolution of blood clots within the cerebral arteries. The Interventional Radiology Laboratory, in cooperation with the Neurosurgery and Neurotraumatology Unit, has been providing endovascular treatment to patients with aneurysms and malformations of intracranial vessels for several years now. In the recently opened Centre for Interventional Management of Stroke, the treatment offer will be extended to include patients with ischaemic stroke.
