obruni„Obruni goes back to Africa” – this is the title of a humanitarian aid project initiated by two students of Collegium Medicum in Bydgoszcz, Kasia and Natalia. Inspired by their previous stay in Africa and equipped with valuable experience gained during the campaign, the girls decided to return and continue with their charity mission.

Kasia is currently a student of the Public health program and a graduate of the Emergency medical science program. She has already coordinated several medical projects in Africa. Natalia is a student of Nursing and a graduate of the Emergency Medical Science program as well. The two paramedics want to put their knowledge and skills into practice and use it to provide direct support the Ghanaian society.

The main objective of the project is to provide medical equipment and run an intensive course in basic diagnostics and emergency medicine for volunteers working in emergency medical services in Ghana.

Here’s what Kasia and Natalia have to say about the project:

What is our objective?
Our objective is to provide medical equipment and run an intensive course in basic diagnostics and emergency medicine for volunteers working in emergency medical services in Ghana.

Why is it so important?
Lack of basic equipment and, most importantly, low qualifications of emergency medical personnel are a major problem in Ghana. We want to change that. Together with our friends we are collecting equipment for Ghanaian ambulances. It will improve the diagnostic possibilities and, consequently, patients’ chances for survival.

Why is this project different from others?
During my first, year-long mission to Ghana, I gained first-hand experience of working in African emergency departments. Because of the shortage of standard equipment and a different morbidity profile, the training courses offered so far and based on western curricula do not bring the desired results.
We are working on a training program and a course book based on our experiences from previous missions and adapted to the conditions of working in Ghana. We will not be teaching advanced airway management techniques, ECG analysis or operation of ultrasound machines – such devices cannot even be hoped for in African emergency departments. They have to rely on their own senses and skills.

Why do we think that it’s worth the effort?
Human life is the most precious gift. Medical equipment and knowledge of emergency medicine can save thousands of people’s lives. Every single life is worth our effort, so the project definitely deserves your support.

Project costs:
Tickets – approx. PLN 3,400
Insurance – PLN 300
Food and accommodation – PLN 300
Costs of training materials – covered by sponsors and own funds + funds left from this collection, if any
Total – approx. PLN 4,400 per one person. Do not forget that there are two of us 😉
Don’t leave one of us in Poland!
Project completion is planned for February 2017.

PS: You probably wonder what “Obruni” is – it is a Ghanaian expression for “white person”. This is how the locals called our volunteers during their first stay in Africa.
