De Humani Corporis Fabrica by Andreas Vesalius

On May and June 2013 the Nicolaus Copernicus University Collegium Medicum in Bydgoszcz had the pleasure of hosting a remarkable exhibition of illustrations to one of the most significant works in the history of medicine – De Humani Corporis Fabrica by Andreas Vesalius, an outstanding physician and anatomist often referred to as the father of human anatomy.

In 1543, De Humani Corporis Fabrica was published, its success attributed to a skilful combination of substantially accurate text and fine, precise pictures. The work had over 700 pages and included nearly 300 full-page and smaller woodcut illustrations. A copy of the treatise can be found in the collection of the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun library.
